Your first AdSense payment lands in your bank account in dollars, YouTube's payment settings keep asking for "U.S. tax info", and a friend says Google cuts 30 percent of everything. Meanwhile your CA asks whether you will file ITR-3 or ITR-4, and nobody has mentioned GST. A creator can earn for a year before finding out that three separate rules apply to the same money.
YouTube income is taxable in India, usually as business or professional income, and it is separately subject to US withholding on the share earned from US viewers. You can claim credit in India for that US tax with Form 67. For GST, AdSense payments from a foreign Google entity are generally treated as an export of services. This post covers each rule, what Google's own help pages say, and the questions that nobody has settled officially.
YouTube earnings are taxable in India, usually as business or professional income
YouTube's help page on US tax requirements says that your local income tax laws may still apply to your earnings, and that YouTube and Google do not give tax advice. In India, creator income is usually reported under profits and gains of business or profession, depending on the facts. There is no CBDT notice that names YouTubers as a category, so how you file is a decision to make with a CA.
You convert dollar receipts to rupees for your return using the income-tax rule, which is separate from the GST rate on an invoice. Ask your CA which rate and date apply to your income. The guide on invoicing international clients from India covers the invoice side.
Google withholds US tax only on earnings from US viewers
Every monetising creator, wherever they live, has to give YouTube tax information. Google says it is a withholding agent that must follow US tax law, and that withholding applies only to the part of your earnings that comes from viewers in the United States. Rates run between 0 and 30 percent depending on whether your country has a tax treaty with the US. Google's own example for India is 15 percent of earnings from US viewers, which matches the copyright royalty cap in Article 12 of the India-US tax treaty. Google says it cannot decide treaty eligibility for you.
You submit tax info in AdSense under Payments, Payments info, Manage settings, then the payments profile. Individuals use Form W-8BEN, and the page names 10 December each year as the date to submit and claim a treaty benefit, so check the current date on the live page. The form gets renewed every few years.
Submit tax info on time, because the default is far higher
Google's page says that without valid tax info, a business account has 30 percent of its US earnings withheld, and an individual account faces backup withholding of 24 percent of total earnings worldwide. Another version of the page says "up to 24 percent". Either way it is a much bigger cut than the treaty rate, so submit the form before the deadline each year rather than after the first deduction.
Claim the US tax back as a foreign tax credit with Form 67
When US tax is withheld on income that is also taxed in India, you can claim credit in India for it under the foreign tax credit rules, by filing Form 67 online with proof of the withholding. The credit is the lower of the Indian tax on that income and the foreign tax paid. Income Tax Department guidance says Form 67 should be filed before the due date for your return under Section 139(1), and Rule 128 as amended in 2022 allows up to the end of the assessment year, but do not rely on that. For income from 1 April 2026, the Income-tax Rules 2026 reportedly replace Form 67 with Form 44, so check which form your year uses. The guide on tax clauses and foreign withholding covers the mechanics. Because foreign tax credit claims often move a return out of ITR-4, ask your CA before you file.
Which ITR and which presumptive scheme is not settled
ITR-3 is the safe default if you keep books or claim actual expenses such as equipment, editing software and internet. ITR-4 is possible only under a presumptive scheme, and which one a YouTuber can use is not settled. Section 44ADA is for notified professions, and no official source names content creation. Some commentary says most creators fall under Section 44AD instead, with different limits and rates. Presumptive schemes allow no expense deductions, so only the actual-profit method lets you claim your costs. The comparison in the guide on ITR-3 versus ITR-4 applies, and a CA should decide.
If your taxable income is moderate, check your position with the tax-free income calculator, bearing in mind that it assumes a particular way of computing profit.
For GST, AdSense payments from a foreign Google entity are generally treated as exports
A supply of services is an export under Section 2(6) of the IGST Act when you are in India, the recipient is outside India, the place of supply is outside India, you are paid in foreign exchange, and the parties are not merely establishments of the same person. Commentary generally treats payments from a foreign Google entity as exports and payments from Google India as domestic, but no advance ruling or CBIC circular on ad revenue was found, so treat that as the common view, not a ruling. Registered creators usually supply under an LUT, as explained in the guide on LUT and GST for freelance exports.
The registration threshold is ₹20 lakh of aggregate turnover for services, and the existing guides count export value toward it, as the guide on when a freelancer must register for GST explains. Confirm your position with a CA before you register or decide not to.
Brand deals are a separate set of rules
Payments from Indian brands attract TDS under Section 194J or 194C, and free products can attract 194R, as covered in the guide on which TDS section applies to freelancers. Check your Form 26AS and AIS to see what TDS actually appears. Google's help pages describe only US withholding, and no source confirms that Google deducts any Indian TDS on AdSense payments.
Keep records of every payment
Keep your AdSense payment statements, the tax form you submitted, bank advices and the Form 67 acknowledgement together. Rinto keeps notes and file attachments per client, so brand-deal agreements and invoices stay with each client, and its income-by-client view shows which clients bring in the most. Rinto does not file returns or compute foreign tax credit, which your CA does. The guide on FIRC versus FIRA explains the bank documents for foreign receipts. This post is general information, not tax advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is YouTube income taxed in India?
YouTube's help page says local income tax laws may still apply to your earnings. In India, creator income is usually reported as business or professional income, depending on the facts, and it is taxed at your slab rates. Whether you can file ITR-4 under a presumptive scheme is not settled for creators, so ITR-3 is the safe default if you keep books or claim expenses. Ask a CA which route fits your case before you file. Keep your AdSense statements and bank advices together for each year.
Does Google deduct 30 percent tax from Indian YouTubers?
Not on all earnings. Google withholds US tax only on the share earned from US viewers, at a rate between 0 and 30 percent depending on the treaty. Google's own example for India is 15 percent. If you do not submit valid tax info, a business account has 30 percent of US earnings withheld, and an individual account faces backup withholding of 24 percent of total worldwide earnings. Submit your tax form in AdSense before the yearly deadline to avoid the default.
Can I claim credit in India for the US tax withheld on AdSense?
Yes, as a foreign tax credit. You file Form 67 online with proof of the US withholding, and the credit is the lower of the Indian tax on that income and the foreign tax paid. Income Tax Department guidance says Form 67 should be filed before the Section 139(1) due date, and for income from 1 April 2026 the new rules reportedly use Form 44, so check which form applies. Claiming a foreign tax credit often moves a return out of ITR-4, so ask your CA which form to use before you file. Keep Google's withholding statement together with the Form 67 acknowledgement.
Do I need to charge GST on YouTube income?
Payments from a foreign Google entity are generally treated as an export of services, which is zero-rated, though no advance ruling or CBIC circular on ad revenue was found, so this is the common view and not a ruling. Registration depends on your aggregate turnover crossing ₹20 lakh, and export value counts toward it. Registered creators usually supply under an LUT. Confirm whether you must register, and how your AdSense income is treated, with a CA. Keep your payment statements to show the nature of the receipts.
Which ITR form should a YouTuber file?
ITR-3 is the safe default if you keep books or claim actual expenses such as equipment, software and internet. ITR-4 is possible only under a presumptive scheme, and no official source settles whether a YouTuber fits Section 44ADA, which is for notified professions, or Section 44AD, which has different limits and rates. Presumptive schemes allow no expense deductions. Foreign tax credit claims can also change the form, so a CA should decide. Whichever route you choose, keep your books and records consistent from one year to the next.
