Frequently asked questions

How much income is tax-free in India under the new regime?

For AY 2026-27, tax is nil when taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, because the Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000 cancels the slab tax. A salaried person gets a ₹75,000 standard deduction, so gross salary of up to ₹12.75 lakh can be tax-free. A freelancer on Section 44ADA is taxed on 50 percent of gross receipts, so receipts of up to ₹24 lakh can be tax-free.

Does the ₹12.75 lakh tax-free limit apply to freelancers?

No. The ₹12.75 lakh figure adds the ₹75,000 standard deduction, which is available to salaried people and pensioners, not to professional income. A freelancer's limit is taxable income of ₹12 lakh. On Section 44ADA that means gross receipts of about ₹24 lakh, because only 50 percent of receipts is treated as profit.

What happens if my income is just above the tax-free limit?

Marginal relief applies. Your tax is capped at the amount by which taxable income exceeds ₹12 lakh, so earning slightly above the limit does not cost you the whole ₹60,000 rebate. The relief stops helping at about ₹12.7 lakh of taxable income, after which normal slab tax applies. The calculator applies this automatically.

Do I still need to file a return if my tax is nil?

Yes, if your income is above the basic exemption limit, which is ₹4 lakh under the new regime. The rebate reduces the tax to nil but does not remove the duty to file. Filing also lets you claim a refund of any TDS deducted and keeps your record clean for loans and visa applications.

Does this calculator include capital gains or the old regime?

No. It uses the new regime for individuals under 60 and covers salary, freelance or professional income and other income taxed at slab rates, including the surcharge that starts above ₹50 lakh. The rebate does not reduce tax on special-rate income such as short-term capital gains, so add those separately. To compare regimes with your deductions, use the old versus new regime calculator.
