You apply online, the form asks for a salary slip, and you do not have one. You bill clients, your money arrives in lumps, and the application stalls at the one document you cannot attach. Most freelancers read that as a rule and give up, or take whatever card their bank pushes.
It is not a rule. A credit card for freelancers with no salary slip is possible in India, because RBI does not ask for a payslip and each issuer decides what proof it wants. This post covers what RBI's current card Directions say, how a lender reads a self-employed applicant, how a card against a fixed deposit works, and what to do when you are turned down. Nobody can promise you approval, and this post does not.
Can a freelancer get a credit card without a salary slip?
Yes, it is possible. RBI sets no minimum income and does not make a salary slip or ITR a condition for a credit card. Each issuer writes its own policy and decides which documents it will accept. RBI does not block you for lacking a payslip. Approval stays the issuer's call.
The practical problem is that many application forms are built around salaried people, so the self-employed route often needs a different document set or a different type of card. The steps for downloading your ITR, Form 26AS and AIS, and for getting a CA certificate with a UDIN, are already covered in the guide on income proof for a visa, credit card or rental, so this post does not repeat them.
What RBI's rules fix, and what they leave to the issuer
RBI fixes how issuers must treat you: no unsolicited cards, written reasons for a rejection, and no stated minimum income. The issuer decides documents, eligibility, limit and fees. The rules sit in the Credit Cards and Debit Cards: Issuance and Conduct Directions, 2025, dated 28 November 2025 and updated on 1 October 2026. RBI publishes separate versions for commercial banks, small finance banks, regional rural banks and NBFCs, so read the one for your issuer's category. The Directions tell issuers to assess credit risk independently and to take into account the applicant's independent financial means.
Two of those protections matter on day one. If the issuer rejects you, the issuer must give you the specific reasons in writing, and RBI strictly prohibits unsolicited cards and upgrades. The Directions replace RBI's earlier instructions on cards, so rely on the current text and not on an older blog or bank page that quotes the previous rules.
How lenders read a self-employed applicant
Lenders look at steady credits in your bank account, filed income tax returns and your existing credit history. These are general practice, not an RBI list, so confirm what your issuer asks for.
This is where freelancers lose out unnecessarily. A lender looking at a personal account where client money, family transfers and your own top-ups all land together cannot tell what your business earns. Keeping client receipts in one clearly identifiable account makes the picture readable, and the guide to a business bank account for freelancers covers how to set that up. If you also apply for loans, the guide on a personal loan and credit score as a freelancer explains how the same history is read there.
A card against a fixed deposit works when income proof is the sticking point
An issuer gives you a secured card against a fixed deposit you hold with it. The issuer places a lien on the deposit, and the deposit keeps earning its interest. The issuer decides eligibility and the credit limit.
Whether a card against a deposit needs income proof is the issuer's call, so read its terms before you open the deposit. Two questions to put to the issuer in writing: what limit it will set against the deposit, and whether the card is reported to credit bureaus. Not every secured card builds history the way people assume, and that second answer decides whether the card helps your score.
Add-on cards stay your liability
An add-on card can be issued only to people you, the principal cardholder, specifically identify. You remain liable for what they spend. That makes an add-on card a convenience for a partner or a parent, and not a way to share risk.
If you are a freelancer paying for a business tool on the card, keep your business and personal spending easy to tell apart before you hand anyone else a card on the same account. The statement is the record you will reconcile against, and add-on spending shows on your statement.
How a card affects your credit score
A card affects your score through how you use it. Payment history and utilisation are widely cited as the biggest factors. Utilisation is the share of your limit you have used, so as an illustration, spending ₹30,000 on a card with a ₹1,00,000 limit means 30 percent utilisation.
Two checks are easy to confuse. Looking at your own score is a soft enquiry. A lender checking your credit on an application is a hard enquiry, so a run of applications in a short stretch leaves a trail that lenders can see. Each credit bureau gives you one free full credit report a calendar year, so use it to confirm that your details and any new card appear correctly.
On timing, lenders report to bureaus at least fortnightly, so a payment you made can take a little while to show. And an account can be reported as past due only after it is more than three days past due, which is a reason to pay on time and not a reason to be casual about the date. Do not expect any card, secured or not, to lift your score by a set amount.
If your application is rejected, the issuer must give you the reason in writing
The issuer must give you the specific reasons in writing. Ask for it if it does not arrive, because the reason tells you what to fix: thin credit history, unclear income, or something on your report. Do not reapply in the same week, since every full application leaves a hard enquiry.
Once you hold a card, RBI's Directions give you a few more rights. You can change your billing cycle at least once, which helps if your client payments arrive late in the month. And you can ask to close the card, and the issuer has 7 working days to honour the request. For disputes, take the matter to the issuer first and keep the written trail.
Keep records that help your next application
Keep one record of what each client paid and when, so you can answer an issuer's income question without digging through chats. Rinto shows income by client and lets you mark invoices paid, so you always know who owes you what. It does not issue income certificates, arrange credit or cards, give financial advice, or process payments. Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a credit card without a salary slip in India?
Yes, it is possible. RBI sets no minimum income and does not make a salary slip a condition for a credit card, and its Directions tell issuers to assess your independent financial means. What you need to show is decided by each issuer, so the documents differ from one lender to another. A card against a fixed deposit is another route, and you are entitled to a written reason if you are rejected. Check the issuer's own policy before you apply, so you do not take a hard enquiry on a form you were never likely to clear.
Can a freelancer get a credit card without ITR?
RBI does not make an ITR a condition for a credit card, so it is not ruled out by the regulator. In practice a filed return is one of the clearest ways to show a self-employed income, so issuers often ask for it, and it can make approval easier. Without one, a card against a fixed deposit is another route to ask the issuer about. Ask the issuer which documents it accepts from self-employed applicants before you apply. If you have not filed, the guide on ITR-4 for freelancers explains the form most freelancers use.
Does a credit card against FD improve CIBIL score?
It can, but only if the issuer reports the card to the credit bureaus, so ask them directly. A secured card builds history only if the issuer reports it to the bureaus. Once it is reported, paying on time and keeping your utilisation low are the habits widely cited as the biggest factors in a score. Nobody can tell you the score will rise by a set number of points, and a card does not offset missed payments elsewhere. Check your free credit report once a calendar year to confirm the card appears and the details are right.
Is income proof needed for a credit card against a fixed deposit?
It depends on the issuer, because RBI leaves eligibility to the lender. A card against a fixed deposit is secured by a lien on your deposit, which keeps earning interest, and the deposit backs the card. Whether the issuer still asks for income proof, and what limit it sets against the deposit, is written in its terms. Ask before you open the deposit, since the money is tied up once the lien is placed. Also ask whether the card is reported to credit bureaus.
What can I do if my credit card application is rejected?
Ask for the reason, because RBI's Directions say the issuer must give you the specific reasons in writing. Use it to decide what to fix: your credit report, your income documents, or the type of card you applied for. Pull your free credit report to check for errors, and consider a card against a fixed deposit if unclear income was the issue. Avoid reapplying straight away, since each full application by a lender leaves a hard enquiry. If the reason looks wrong, take it up with the issuer in writing first.
