Income Proof for Freelancers: Visa, Card, Rental

21 October 2026·7 min read

A salaried person hands over three payslips and a Form 16. A freelancer, asked for "income proof" by a credit card issuer, a landlord or a consulate, usually has invoices in a folder, a bank account with irregular credits, and a tax return that shows only half their receipts. The paperwork exists. It is just not in a form that anyone recognises, until you know which documents to pull and where to get them.

A freelancer's income proof is the filed income tax return with its acknowledgement and computation, Form 26AS or AIS showing tax deducted by clients, and bank statements. A CA certificate can support these. What each requester asks for differs: card issuers set their own policy, landlords ask by habit, and consulates follow their country's rules. This post shows how to download each document and what to expect from each audience, and it leaves loans to a separate guide.

Download your ITR documents from View Filed Returns

On the income tax e-filing portal, go to e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Filed Returns. From there you can download the ITR-V or acknowledgement, the complete ITR in PDF, and, once your return has been processed, the intimation order under Section 143(1). The portal emails the intimation after processing. Menu labels change from time to time, so follow what the portal shows. The guide to income tax notices and 143(1) intimations explains what that order means.

Most people who ask for income proof want the last two or three years of returns, so make this download part of your yearly filing routine.

Form 26AS and AIS show what your clients reported about you

Form 26AS is under e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Form 26AS. The portal redirects you to TDS-CPC, where you accept the terms, choose the assessment year and view type, and download. It is free. From tax year 2026-27 the Income-tax Act 2025 calls the equivalent statement Form 168, so check the portal for the name. AIS can be downloaded as a PDF, JSON or CSV file, and the TIS is its summary. Together they show tax your clients deducted and receipts reported against your PAN, which is useful evidence that your income is real and regular. The guide on a TDS credit that does not match 26AS shows how to fix gaps before you hand them over.

A CA certificate supports your figures, and it needs a UDIN

Some requesters ask for an income certificate from a Chartered Accountant. Since 1 February 2019 the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India has required a UDIN, a unique document identification number, on certificates, generated by a practising CA on the UDIN portal. A UDIN lets the reader verify the document on the UDIN portal but does not by itself prove the figures are right, and a CA can only certify what your records support, so give your CA the returns, bank statements and invoices first. No format for an income certificate is prescribed.

Credit card issuers decide their own documents

RBI's Master Direction on credit cards sets no minimum income and has no separate rule for self-employed applicants. It requires issuers to assess credit risk taking into account the applicant's independent financial means, leaves the decision to the issuer, and requires a rejection to come with written reasons. Issuers set their own document lists, and returns and bank statements are common asks, so check with your issuer, and ask for the reasons in writing if you are turned down. For loans the document list is different, so see the guide to personal loans and credit scores for freelancers.

Landlords ask by habit, not by law

No central law requires a tenant to show income proof that we know of, so a landlord's request is a preference. Landlords have no standard list. Offers that commonly help include the last return, a few months of bank statements, or invoices and a contract showing steady work, and some may ask for a larger deposit or a guarantor instead. Offer what you have, in a tidy folder, and explain that your income comes in invoices, not payslips.

Visa officers follow their own country's rules

There is no single list. The UK's Standard Visitor guidance says you must show you can support yourself and pay for your return travel, or have someone else fund it. For the US, the consular officer decides what evidence of your ability to pay trip costs is enough at the interview. Schengen countries differ: Germany's embassy asks for bank statements for the last three months, stamped by the bank, and income tax proof for two assessment years from self-employed applicants. Read the official page for your destination, and see gov.uk's visitor documents page as an example of what an official page says.

Explain the gap between receipts and net income

If you file under the presumptive scheme, ITR-4 shows your gross receipts, your cash receipts and a presumptive income of at least 50 percent of receipts. That means the net income on your return may be higher or lower than your real take-home pay, and a reader can be confused by the difference. Attach a one-page note that states gross receipts, the scheme you filed under, and that bank statements and TDS records support the figures. The guide to ITR-4 for freelancers explains what the form reports. Never submit altered or inflated documents, because a false document can lead to rejection and legal trouble.

Keep the pack ready all year

Rinto keeps notes and file attachments per client, so contracts, invoices and TDS certificates for each client stay together, and its income-by-client view shows which clients bring in the most. Rinto does not issue income certificates, which come from your CA. The guide to a business bank account for freelancers covers keeping business income in one account, which makes statements easier to read. This post is general information, not legal or tax advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is income proof for a freelancer in India?

A freelancer's income proof is usually the filed income tax return with its acknowledgement and computation, Form 26AS or AIS showing tax your clients deducted, and bank statements. A CA certificate with a UDIN can support these. What each requester accepts differs: card issuers set their own policy, landlords ask by habit, and consulates follow their country's rules. Download the documents each year after filing, so the pack is ready when someone asks. Keep the pack in one folder, with the latest return on top, so you can share it within minutes.

How do I download my ITR acknowledgement and Form 26AS?

On the income tax e-filing portal, use e-File, then Income Tax Returns, then View Filed Returns to download the ITR-V or acknowledgement, the complete ITR in PDF, and the 143(1) intimation once processed. For Form 26AS, use e-File, Income Tax Returns, then View Form 26AS, which redirects to TDS-CPC, where you choose the assessment year and download. Newer years use Form 168. AIS downloads as PDF, JSON or CSV. Menu labels change, so follow the portal. If a download fails, retry later or check that the return was processed, since the intimation appears only after processing.

Does a freelancer need a CA income certificate?

Only if the requester asks for one. A CA certificate supports your returns and bank statements, but it does not replace them, and no format for an income certificate is prescribed. Since 1 February 2019 certificates need a UDIN generated by a practising CA, and a UDIN does not by itself prove the figures are right. A CA can only certify what your records support, so give them your returns, bank statements and invoices before you ask for the certificate. Ask the CA what the certificate will say before you pay, so it matches what the requester asked for.

What income proof do credit card companies ask freelancers for?

RBI's credit card direction sets no minimum income and no special rule for self-employed applicants. It requires issuers to consider the applicant's independent financial means, leaves the decision to the issuer, and requires written reasons for a rejection. Issuers set their own document lists, and returns and bank statements are common asks, so check with the issuer before you apply. If you are turned down, ask for the reasons in writing and fix the specific gap. Apply with the documents ready, and note that a rejection does not stop you reapplying with fuller records.

What financial documents do visa applications need from a freelancer?

It depends on the country, and there is no single list. The UK asks you to show you can support yourself and pay for return travel. For the US, the consular officer decides what evidence of ability to pay is enough. Schengen countries differ, for example Germany asks self-employed applicants for three months of stamped bank statements and income tax proof for two assessment years. Read the official page for your destination and the embassy checklist. Check which documents need a bank stamp or attestation, and allow time to get them before your appointment.
