Start as an Online Tutor or Course Creator in India

21 October 2026·7 min read

Teaching online looks like the simplest freelance business to start: you already know the subject, you need a laptop and a decent connection, and students are a platform signup away. The complication arrives with the first payout. Is it taxed as a profession or a business? Does GST apply to tuition? Does the platform keep a third of your fee before it reaches you? Most guides on teaching online stop at "how to find students" and leave those questions to you.

To start as an online tutor or course creator in India, pick a subject and level you can teach well, begin on a marketplace to find students quickly, and decide later whether to sell on your own. The money side is less clear than for most freelance skills: GST exemptions for tuition are written narrowly, and the position of an individual tutor is not settled in the sources we found. This guide covers how to start, what platforms take, and what to ask a CA before your income grows.

Start on a marketplace, then build your own student base

A marketplace such as Preply or Udemy brings students without you spending on ads, which is why most new tutors begin there. The cost is a share of every fee. Choose a narrow subject and a clear level, such as board exam maths for class 10 or spoken English for working professionals, and write a profile that says exactly who you teach and what they will be able to do afterwards. The pillar guide on how to start freelancing in India covers the common first steps: PAN, a bank account and a way to keep records.

Over time, tutors who build a following move students to their own booking page or course site, because they keep the full fee. The trade is that you then handle your own marketing, payments and invoices.

Platform terms change, so read them before you commit

Preply's help article on its commission model, dated September 2024, says the first trial lesson with a new student pays you in full, and later lessons carry a commission that starts at 33 percent for new tutors and falls towards 18 percent as your taught hours rise. Udemy's instructor revenue share says you receive 37 percent of the net amount on standard sales and 97 percent when a student buys through your own coupon or referral link. Both change, so confirm the figures on the platforms' pages. Non-US instructors on Udemy submit a W-8BEN as part of tax settings, as its help pages describe.

No reliable data on what tutors earn in India was found, so test with a few students before you plan around a number.

GST on tuition: the exemption is written for educational institutions

The GST exemption for education covers services by an "educational institution", defined narrowly in the notification. Advance rulings have held that an online training company (Kerala) and a CA coaching institute (Andhra Pradesh) were not covered and were taxable, but those rulings bind only the businesses that applied for them. No CBIC circular or court ruling settling the position of a sole individual tutor was found, so do not assume you are exempt or taxable. Ask a CA, especially if you may cross the registration threshold.

That threshold is ₹20 lakh of aggregate turnover for services (₹10 lakh in special category states), and aggregate turnover counts exempt and export supplies, as the guide on when a freelancer must register for GST explains. Students abroad may make your lessons an export of services, which the guide on the place of supply for a foreign client covers. Whether a pre-recorded course sold to foreign buyers is an export is not settled in the sources found.

Whether tutoring is a profession or a business for tax is also unclear

The presumptive scheme for professionals covers the professions named in the Act and those the government has notified. Tuition teaching is not among the named professions, so ask a CA whether the professional scheme applies or whether the business scheme, with different limits and rates, fits better. Under either presumptive scheme you cannot claim separate expenses, as the guide on home office and internet deductions explains.

TDS can also arise on platform payouts, but whether a specific platform deducts it is not confirmed, so check Form 26AS and AIS each quarter.

Coaching rules are for states to make, so check yours

The Ministry of Education's 2024 guidelines for regulating coaching centres were circulated to states as a model: no enrolment of students under 16, and applying to establishments with more than 50 students. They are not national law, and some states, including Rajasthan, have passed or proposed their own coaching laws. Whether any of them reaches an individual online tutor is not addressed in the sources found. Check your state's rules, and avoid guaranteeing marks or ranks in anything you publish.

Put the arrangement in writing and keep your records

For private students and parents, a short agreement covering fees, cancellation and what happens if lessons are missed prevents most disputes, and the guide to a freelance contract in India shows the sections to use. Rinto lets you mark invoices paid and always know who owes you what, and its time tracking shows your real hourly rate per project, which helps you price lessons. Rinto does not handle GST or income tax filing. This post is general information, not tax advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I start as an online tutor in India?

Choose a subject and level you can teach well, such as board exam maths for class 10, then list yourself on a marketplace to find your first students. Write a profile that says exactly who you teach and what they will be able to do afterwards. You need a PAN, a bank account and a way to keep records. Platforms take a share of every fee, so over time many tutors build their own student base and booking page. Keep every lesson booking and payment record from day one.

Is GST applicable on tuition fees charged by a private tutor?

It is not settled for an individual tutor. The GST exemption for education covers services by an educational institution, defined narrowly, and advance rulings in Kerala and Andhra Pradesh held that private coaching businesses were not covered, though those rulings bind only the applicants. Registration is required when aggregate turnover exceeds ₹20 lakh for services, counting exempt and export supplies. Ask a CA how your tutoring should be treated before you cross that level. Keep your invoices and platform statements for each year.

How much commission do Preply and Udemy take?

Preply's help article, dated September 2024, says the first trial lesson with a new student pays you in full, and later lessons carry a commission that starts at 33 percent for new tutors and falls towards 18 percent as hours taught rise. Udemy's instructor help says you receive 37 percent of the net amount on standard sales and 97 percent through your own coupon or link. These change, so confirm them on the live pages before relying on them. Re-check the pages before each tax year.

Can a tutor file ITR-4 under the presumptive scheme?

It is unclear. The professional presumptive scheme covers the professions named in the Act and those the government has notified, and tuition teaching is not on the named list. Commentary says tutors may need the business presumptive scheme, with different limits and rates, but that is a blog-level view and not a ruling. Under either scheme you cannot claim separate expenses. Ask a CA which scheme fits your case, and whether keeping books suits you better. Keep a note of what your CA advises.

Do coaching rules apply to an individual online tutor?

Not clearly. The Ministry of Education's 2024 coaching guidelines were circulated to states as a model, with no enrolment under 16 and a scope covering establishments with more than 50 students, and they are not national law. Some states, including Rajasthan, have passed or proposed coaching laws. None of the sources found addresses an individual online tutor. Check your state's rules, and avoid promising marks, ranks or selections in anything you publish. Review your state's rules once a year, since they keep changing.
