A video editor cuts footage together. A motion designer builds the footage: the animated logo, the explainer where a chart grows on screen, the kinetic text that makes a reel stop thumbs. The skill overlaps with editing and graphic design, but the work is scoped, priced and delivered differently, and most "how to start" advice for video freelancers skips that.
To start freelancing in motion graphics in India, learn one animation tool well, build three or four finished pieces in a clear niche, price by the second of finished animation and by deliverable, and sort out the tax and licence questions that come with brand assets. This guide covers the tools and what they cost, the hardware reality, how to scope a job, where first clients come from, and the tax question that has no easy answer.
Start with one animation tool: After Effects, DaVinci Resolve or Blender
After Effects is the most widely used tool for 2D motion graphics. On Adobe's India plans page as of October 2026, After Effects as a single app is ₹733.96 a month including GST on the annual plan billed monthly, and Creative Cloud Pro, the full app bundle, is ₹398.99 a month in the first year for eligible students and teachers, then ₹699.01. Prices and offers change often, so check the page before you subscribe.
Two free routes exist. DaVinci Resolve has a free version, and it includes Fusion, which Blackmagic describes as a node-based tool for visual effects and motion graphics. Blackmagic also offers downloadable training, including a video on motion graphics in Fusion. Blender is free and open source, and its licence page says work made with it can be used commercially. It suits 3D and stylised animation more than quick text and shape work. Pick one tool and finish projects in it before you add another.
Plan for rendering, not just creating, when you buy a laptop
Animation work is heavier than editing a talking-head video, because previews and final renders push RAM and the graphics card. Adobe's system-requirements pages for recent versions of After Effects recommend about 16 GB of RAM for HD work and 32 GB or more for 4K, and a GPU with at least 4 GB of video memory. Check Adobe's current page before you buy, because the numbers change between versions.
Treat render time as a cost. A short animation that renders overnight is fine for a retainer, but a rush job on a slow machine eats the margin. If you already own a laptop, build your first portfolio pieces on it and upgrade when paid work justifies it.
Pick one niche and make three finished pieces before you pitch
Choose one lane, make three short pieces that look finished, and show each with the problem it solved. Motion work covers explainers, animated logos, social reels, product videos for software companies and ad creatives, and a portfolio that mixes them signals no clear skill. A graphic designer can bring Illustrator assets into After Effects, and a video editor can add titles and kinetic text, so use whichever bridge you already have. The guides on starting as a video editor and starting as a graphic designer cover the neighbouring skills.
Nobody publishes reliable data on which niche pays best in India, so test with real conversations. Upwork has motion graphics job categories, and its freelancer fee is variable between 0 and 15 percent per contract since May 2025, and GST can apply to its fees for Indian freelancers, a point covered in the guide on GST on Upwork and Fiverr fees.
Scope by seconds of finished animation, not by hours
Clients cannot judge hours of animation, but they understand length and deliverables. Quote by the second of finished animation, the number of animated elements, and the stages you charge for: script and storyboard, style frames, animation, and final export. A locked script before animation starts is your best protection, because rewriting a script after the animation is built means rebuilding scenes.
List the delivery specs in the proposal: aspect ratios such as 16:9 and 9:16, loops, captions, transparency, and the file formats you will hand over. Cap revisions per stage, not just at the end, and use the approach from the guide on handling scope creep. Motion rates vary too widely to quote, so build yours from your own time per finished second plus your tool and render costs.
Read the licence before any font, track or stock clip goes into client work
Licences differ by plan and by project. Envato Elements licenses each download for a single specific project, needs an active subscription to download and license, and keeps a project licensed if it was downloaded and finished during the subscription. Artlist's Pro licence covers client use for the specific projects created, and its Social licence is for personal creators. Read the live licence before you use music or stock footage in a client's paid ad, and keep the licence receipt with the project files.
Put it in the contract: say who supplies fonts, music and stock, who pays for the licences, and that the client owns the final animation only once the invoice is paid. The guide on writing a freelance contract covers the clauses.
Ask a CA whether Section 44ADA covers your work before you assume it does
Export of services can be zero-rated under GST when you are paid in foreign exchange by a client outside India, and registered freelancers usually supply under an LUT, as the guide on LUT and GST for freelance exports explains. On income tax, the presumptive scheme in Section 44ADA covers only specified professions, and whether motion graphics or video work falls inside one is unclear. Film artists are a notified category, whether motion work fits is unclear, and many video freelancers may be taxed as business income instead.
Do not assume that 50 percent of your receipts is your profit. Ask a CA these questions: does my work fall in a notified profession, or is it business income, which presumptive rules apply if it is business, and how does the Income-tax Act 2025 treat my category. The deeper comparison is in the guide on ITR-3 versus ITR-4.
Keep projects, revisions and invoices in one place
Motion projects go through stages and revision rounds, which is where freelancers lose track of what was approved and what was paid. Rinto keeps a client's projects, invoices and contracts linked in one view, and tracks time per task so you can see your real hourly rate per project, which shows whether a fixed per-second price actually paid. Rinto does not render, host or review video. The wider setup is in the pillar guide on how to start freelancing in India. This post is general information, not tax advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which software should I learn to start freelance motion graphics?
Learn one tool well. After Effects is the standard for 2D motion graphics and costs ₹733.96 a month including GST as a single app on Adobe's India plan, as of October 2026. DaVinci Resolve has a free version that includes Fusion, which Blackmagic describes as node-based for motion graphics, and Blender is free and open source and suits 3D and stylised work. Prices and offers change, so check the vendor pages, and finish three projects in one tool before adding another.
What laptop do I need for motion graphics freelancing?
Animation is heavier than basic editing because previews and renders use RAM and the graphics card. Adobe's system-requirements pages for recent After Effects versions recommend about 16 GB of RAM for HD and 32 GB or more for 4K, and a GPU with at least 4 GB of video memory. Check Adobe's current page, since the numbers change by version. If you already own a capable laptop, build your first portfolio on it, and upgrade only when paid work justifies the cost.
How should I price a motion graphics project?
Quote by the second of finished animation, the number of animated elements and the stages you charge for: script and storyboard, style frames, animation and final export. Hours are hard for clients to judge, while length and deliverables are clear. Cap revisions per stage, list the delivery specs such as aspect ratios and captions, and build your rate from your own time per finished second plus tool and render costs. There is no reliable public rate card for India, so test your price with real conversations.
Can I use stock music and footage in client work?
Only within the licence. Envato Elements licenses each download for a single specific project and needs an active subscription to download and license. Artlist's Pro licence covers client use for the specific projects created, while its Social licence is for personal creators. Read the live licence before using any track or clip in a client's paid ad, keep the licence receipt with the project files, and say in your contract who supplies and pays for assets. When in doubt, ask the vendor in writing.
Does Section 44ADA apply to motion graphics freelancers?
It is unclear. Section 44ADA covers specified professions such as legal, medical, engineering, architecture, accountancy, technical consultancy and interior decoration, plus notified categories such as film artists. Whether motion graphics or video work fits depends on the facts, and many video freelancers may be taxed as business income instead. Do not assume that 50 percent of receipts is your profit. Ask a CA which scheme applies to your work, and how the Income-tax Act 2025 treats your category. Bring your invoices and a short description of the work you do, so the CA can judge the category from facts.
