What Udyam Registration Gets a Freelancer Besides Samadhaan

25 October 2026·6 min read

You registered on Udyam because someone said it helps when a client pays late. It does, and you may already know the Samadhaan route. Most freelancers stop there and never ask what else the certificate does.

This post covers the other side of Udyam registration for a freelancer in India: the micro enterprise limits, free registration, how banks treat your class, and the CGTMSE guarantee scheme. It also says plainly what Udyam does not promise, so you do not walk into a bank expecting a loan on the strength of a certificate.

Micro now means Rs 2.5 crore investment and Rs 10 crore turnover

From 1 April 2025, an enterprise is micro if its investment is up to Rs 2.5 crore and its turnover is up to Rs 10 crore. Both conditions must hold. Small is up to Rs 25 crore and Rs 100 crore, and medium is up to Rs 125 crore and Rs 500 crore. The government's notification of the revised criteria raised the earlier Rs 1 crore and Rs 5 crore micro limits.

A solo freelancer's investment is a laptop, a phone and some software, so you sit far inside micro in almost every case. Old blog posts and guides still quote the previous limits, which is why it is worth checking the date on anything you read. Banks and clients see the classification printed on your Udyam certificate.

Registering costs nothing, and the only official site is udyamregistration.gov.in

You register for free, online, on the government's own portal, udyamregistration.gov.in. It runs on self-declaration, so you do not upload documents. You need your Aadhaar and PAN, plus a GSTIN where GST law applies to you. You do not need an agent, and anyone charging a fee to register you is charging for something the portal gives away.

If you are unsure whether your own situation needs a GST number at all, the guide on whether a freelancer needs GST registration sets out the threshold rules. For the basics of how the two registrations differ, see GST versus Udyam for freelancers. The official FAQ ties the GSTIN requirement to the CGST Act, so confirm on the portal what applies to your case.

Banks use your Udyam class for priority sector lending

RBI treats all bank loans to MSMEs as priority sector lending, and banks are guided by the classification on your Udyam certificate. In practice that means a micro enterprise is a category the bank is meant to lend to. It does not mean the bank must approve you. RBI's priority sector FAQ sets out the framework.

Think of the certificate as a label that puts your application in the right box. The bank still looks at your income, your bank statements and your credit history. The guide on personal loans and credit scores for freelancers covers what lenders check once your file is in front of them.

CGTMSE can guarantee a loan up to Rs 10 crore

The Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE) offers credit support for loans to micro and small enterprises up to Rs 10 crore from 1 April 2025. The lender applies for the guarantee, not you. The guarantee covers a share of the lender's risk, and that share varies by category, so ask the bank what applies to your loan. The scheme guidelines are on the DC-MSME site.

You will see this described as a collateral-free loan. That is the marketing phrase, and the bank can still ask for security. Whether a particular lender uses the scheme for a freelancer's loan is the lender's decision, so ask directly before you plan around it.

Late payment protection already has its own guides

Yes, Udyam helps with late payment, and two guides cover it in full. Under Section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act 1961, a client's deduction for an amount owed to a micro or small supplier waits until the year they pay it. The Income-tax Act 2025 applies from 1 April 2026, so check the current Act for the matching provision on payments in FY 2026-27 onward. The payment limit is the agreed period, capped at 45 days, and 15 days where there is no written agreement. Our guide on using Udyam as leverage with a client shows how to word it, and the one on the MSME Samadhaan portal walks through the complaint itself.

Whether an unregistered micro or small supplier is covered is still debated among tax professionals, so do not assume either way. As a practical step, register before you send the invoice you may later need to chase. That is advice on timing, not a legal claim about what the section requires.

What not to expect from Udyam

Udyam does not guarantee a loan, an approval, a subsidy or a payment. It classifies you, and other schemes and lenders then decide what to do with that class. Each scheme has its own eligibility rules, and they change, so check the official page or ask your bank before relying on a blog post, this one included. For a small loan under a separate scheme, see the guide to a MUDRA loan for freelancers.

If your real problem is cash stuck in unpaid invoices rather than a loan, the guide to invoice discounting through TReDS looks at another route. Neither replaces sending clean invoices on time.

Put your Udyam number on your invoices

Your Udyam registration number belongs on your invoices and contracts, because that is where a client or a bank sees your class. Rinto creates GST-ready invoices with automatic IGST/CGST/SGST calculation, and you can mark invoices paid by hand and see which ones are still unpaid. Rinto does not file GST returns, give tax advice or process payments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Udyam registration free for freelancers in India?

Yes. Registration on the government's portal, udyamregistration.gov.in, is free and online. It is a self-declaration, so you do not upload documents, and you need your Aadhaar and PAN, plus a GSTIN where GST law applies to you. You do not need an agent. Websites and agents that ask for a fee to register you are charging for a service the portal provides at no cost. Check the web address before you enter your Aadhaar, and use only the official government site.

Can a freelancer get Udyam registration without a GST number?

Yes, if GST law does not apply to you. Udyam asks for Aadhaar and PAN, and for a GSTIN only where GST law applies to you. Whether it applies depends on your turnover, the kind of services you supply and whether you export, so check the current instructions on udyamregistration.gov.in before you start. If you are unsure whether GST applies to you at all, our guide on whether a freelancer needs GST registration sets out the threshold rules. Have Aadhaar and PAN ready either way.

What is the turnover limit for a micro enterprise in 2026?

A micro enterprise can have investment up to Rs 2.5 crore and turnover up to Rs 10 crore. Both conditions apply together. These limits took effect on 1 April 2025 and replaced the earlier Rs 1 crore investment and Rs 5 crore turnover limits. Small enterprises go up to Rs 25 crore investment and Rs 100 crore turnover, and medium up to Rs 125 crore and Rs 500 crore. A solo freelancer's investment is usually a laptop and some software, so most freelancers sit well inside micro. Older articles still quote the previous figures, so check the date.

Can a freelancer get a CGTMSE collateral-free loan?

Not as a right. CGTMSE offers credit support for loans to micro and small enterprises up to Rs 10 crore from 1 April 2025, but the lender applies for it and decides whether to use it. The guarantee covers part of the lender's risk and the share varies by category. Banks can still ask for security, and "collateral-free" is how the scheme is often marketed, not a right you hold. Ask the bank whether it uses the scheme for your kind of loan and what it will want from you. Your Udyam certificate helps it classify you but does not approve anything.

Do I need Udyam registration for Section 43B(h) protection?

That is not settled. Section 43B(h) applies to payments owed to micro and small enterprises, and tax professionals disagree on whether an unregistered supplier is covered. So do not assume you are protected without a certificate. The practical advice is simple: register before you send the invoice you may later need to chase. Under the rule, a client's deduction waits until the year of payment when they pay late. Medium enterprises are excluded, and the full rule is in our guide on using Udyam as leverage with a client.
