Freelance Shopify Developer in India: Work and Pay

25 October 2026·8 min read

A D2C founder messages you on Instagram: "Can you fix my Shopify theme and set up the store by next week?" You say yes, quote a number off the top of your head, and discover on day three that "set up" included a migration, three apps and a custom checkout banner. If you want to work as a freelance Shopify developer in India, the code is the easy part. Scoping, pricing in dollars and knowing how Shopify itself pays partners is where most people lose money.

This post covers what freelance Shopify work actually involves, the rate ranges published for Indian developers (with their dates and where they disagree), a method for pricing a project, and what Shopify's own help pages say about partner earnings. It also flags what you should confirm in your own Partner Dashboard, so you do not build a plan on a rumour.

Freelance Shopify work covers four kinds of job

Most freelance Shopify work falls into theme customisation, store setup, apps and integrations, and migrations from another platform. Each has a different risk profile, so you should price them differently. Theme work is the easiest to scope. Migrations and integrations hide the most surprises.

Theme customisation means changing an existing theme: sections, product page layouts, banners, speed fixes. Store setup is building a new store end to end, including products, collections, navigation, payments, shipping settings and a theme. Apps and integrations cover custom Shopify apps, connecting a store to an ERP, a courier or a CRM, and fixing what a third-party app broke. Migrations move products, customers and orders from WooCommerce, Magento or another platform, and they are where scope creep lives, because the client's old data is always messier than described. If you are still choosing a stack, the guide on how to start freelance web development in India compares Shopify with the other routes.

Published rates for Indian Shopify developers run from about $6.5 to $53 an hour

Published guides put Indian Shopify freelancers anywhere between roughly $6.5 and $53 an hour, depending on level. That is a wide band, and the pages that publish it are hiring and vendor sites, so use these figures as reference points. Do not quote any of these numbers to a client as "the market rate".

Flexiple's Shopify developer cost page, updated in August 2026, shows a median of about $10 an hour and a typical range of $6.5 to $17, drawn from 4,979 self-disclosed records. Secondtalent's cost-to-hire page, updated in September 2026 with tables dated October 2026, puts India juniors at $10 to $18, mid-level at $15 to $38 and seniors at $22 to $53. An older Meetanshi article from September 2024 gave $20 an hour for India. The sources overlap at roughly $10 to $25 and disagree about the top end.

For the wider picture across stacks, the guide on freelance developer rates in India covers hourly versus project versus retainer pricing.

Price a Shopify project from hours, a buffer and a clear scope

Price a Shopify project by estimating the hours for each deliverable, adding a buffer for revisions and surprises, and multiplying by your own hourly rate. Then write the scope into the quote so extra requests become a new line item. No published source gives a reliable India price band for store setup or migration, so the method matters more than any benchmark.

Here is an illustration, not a market rate. Say a store setup takes 30 hours of build, 6 hours for revisions and QA, and 4 hours of calls, which is 40 hours. Add a 20 percent buffer and you have 48 hours. At an illustrative ₹1,500 an hour, the quote is ₹72,000. Your own rate comes from your costs and tax, which the guide to pricing a freelance project walks through, and the freelance rate calculator gives you a starting number.

Fix the scope in writing: how many templates, how many apps, how many revision rounds, and what counts as a new request. Migrations deserve their own clause about data quality, since you cannot see the old store's mess until you start. The guide on handling scope creep shows how to word it.

Shopify Partners earn a revenue share and one-time payouts under stated conditions

Shopify's help page on how partners earn says that building and transferring a store earns 20 percent of the merchant's monthly base platform or subscription fee (net of discounts or credits) plus 0.1 percent of the merchant's monthly eligible GMV, for 4 years. Starter and Lite plans are not eligible. Shopify states all amounts in USD, and says it has sole discretion and that the terms can change.

To qualify, the store must be a client transfer store created in the Dev Dashboard, or a Plus deal with the Shopify sales team that includes an executed statement of work. The details are on Shopify's how to earn page. As a purely illustrative example, a qualifying store paying a $100 monthly fee with $10,000 of monthly eligible GMV would give $20 plus $10, or $30 a month. Over 4 years that is $1,440 if nothing changes. This is a bonus on top of project fees, not income to plan around.

Themes earn 85 percent of Theme Store revenue. Apps earn 100 percent of the first $1M and 85 percent above that, with a 2.9 percent processing fee, if prior-year App Store earnings are under $20M and company revenue is under $100M. Shopify also lists one-time payouts, such as $2,500 for a new Plus or Enterprise merchant or a Plus upgrade and $500 for POS Pro, but each comes with conditions on the how to earn page. Read those conditions before counting on one. Payout timing and minimums differ between Shopify's own pages, so check the payout terms in your Partner Dashboard. For tax on these payouts, ask a CA, because Shopify's page carries no India-specific note.

The Partner Directory and the Experts marketplace are not the same thing

Shopify's Partner Directory is invite-based, and Plus tier is the minimum for guaranteed eligibility. For the Experts marketplace, check the requirements in your Partner Dashboard, because Shopify's help pages do not list them.

Shopify's page on joining the Partner Directory says the Plus tier needs referral and co-sell revenue of at least $500k a year, or existing-merchant revenue of at least $2.5M a year, from merchants acquired in the last 5 years. It also needs at least 2 Plus or Enterprise shops or 40 Standard shops over those 5 years. A limited number of Registered-tier partners are also eligible. There is no separate application. Shopify invites you after promoting you, and it reviews tiers quarterly on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October. That page does not mention the Experts marketplace, so do not assume its thresholds apply there. For a solo freelancer, those numbers mean the directory is a later goal. Start with client work and a portfolio.

Most freelance Shopify clients come from founders, agencies and your own network

The clients who hire freelance Shopify developers are mostly D2C founders who launched on a theme and now need something custom, agencies that need overflow capacity, and people who already know your work. Upwork and similar marketplaces work for a first few projects, but you compete with developers worldwide.

Founders are easiest to find where they already talk: Instagram, LinkedIn and D2C communities. Send a short audit of their store, such as a slow product page or a broken mobile menu, instead of a generic pitch. Agencies can send repeat overflow work, which smooths out the gaps between projects. Whichever route you use, sign a contract before you touch their store. The guide to a freelance contract for developers covers access, ownership of code and revision limits.

Bill foreign merchants and track your real hours

If your merchant is abroad, you invoice in their currency, and GST treatment of that export depends on your own registration and paperwork. The guide on LUT and GST for freelance exports explains the process, and a CA can confirm how it applies to you.

The harder habit is knowing whether a fixed-price store setup paid you well. Rinto lets you track time per task and see your real hourly rate per project, which shows when that 48-hour estimate became 70. You can set the currency on each invoice, so a merchant abroad can be billed in their own currency, and you can generate an invoice straight from a project with billable tasks and tracked time pulled in. The post on finding your real hourly rate shows how to read the numbers. This post is general information, not tax or legal advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a freelance Shopify developer earn in India?

There is no single reliable figure. Published guides put Indian Shopify freelancers at about $6.5 to $53 an hour depending on level. Flexiple, updated in August 2026, shows a median near $10 an hour from self-disclosed records, and Secondtalent, with tables dated October 2026, shows $15 to $38 for mid-level developers in India. These are hiring and vendor pages, so they are reference points and not guarantees. Your actual earnings depend on your hours, your clients and whether you work on fixed prices. Track your real hours for a few projects before you set a rate.

How do I become a Shopify Expert?

Check your Partner Dashboard for the current Experts marketplace requirements, because Shopify's help pages do not list them. The Partner Directory is a separate thing. It needs Plus tier for guaranteed eligibility, with revenue and shop thresholds listed on Shopify's help page, such as referral and co-sell revenue of at least $500k a year for the Plus tier, and Shopify invites you after promotion instead of letting you apply. A practical start is to build a portfolio of live stores, deliver a few client projects well and keep a record of results you can show.

How does the Shopify Partner Program pay you?

Partners earn a revenue share on qualifying transferred stores, plus Theme Store and App Store revenue. Shopify's help pages confirm how earnings work: 20 percent of a transferred store's monthly plan fee plus 0.1 percent of eligible GMV for 4 years, 85 percent of Theme Store revenue for themes, and 100 percent of the first $1M for apps, with conditions on each. Starter and Lite plans do not qualify for the store revenue share. Shopify says its terms can change, so read the conditions before you rely on any of these amounts.

How do Shopify Partners get paid?

Shopify pays partners in USD to the Partner account. Payout timing and minimums differ between Shopify's own help pages, so check the payout terms in your Partner Dashboard before you plan around a date. Earnings come from the revenue share on qualifying transferred stores, Theme Store and App Store sales, and one-time payouts that carry conditions. Shopify says it has sole discretion and that terms can change. Shopify's page notes you may be responsible for remitting taxes and has no India-specific guidance, so ask a CA how to report these payouts.

Do I need GST for Shopify freelance work from India?

It depends on your turnover and your registration status, and the answer is different for Indian clients and foreign merchants. Services to a client abroad can be treated as exports, which has its own paperwork, and the guide on LUT and GST for freelance exports explains the process. Keep a dated invoice for every project. If you are GST-registered, it must be a GST invoice; the GST portal has the rules. Ask a CA before your first large invoice, since only your own turnover and registration status decide what applies.
